Key skills - what are they?

Key skills are the essential skills you need to get on in the workplace, in learning and in life. You use these skills in lots of different jobs, which means they’re ‘transferable skills’.

The key skills are:

  • communication
  • information and communications technology
  • working with numbers
  • working with others
  • problem solving
  • improving your own learning and performance.

There are many key skills courses. They can also be part of many courses in other subjects.

Key skills are transferable because once you have them you can use them in different situations. Key skills can help you to switch jobs more easily, which is important in today’s workplace.

If you'd like to improve your key skills, call us on 0800 100 900. Calls are free and in confidence and because we're impartial, you'll get the best possible advice on your options. You can also email an adviser or request a call back at a time to suit you.
