Most people want a qualification to show for any learning they undertake. And getting a qualification is useful for proving to employers that you've got good literacy and numeracy skills. There's also the satisfaction of achieving something at the end of a course.
National Tests for Adult Literacy and Numeracy
These tests offer the opportunity to get a qualification. There are two levels: 1 and 2. What does a test involve?
You take the test on a computer or on paper, if you prefer. A tutor will check what level you're at and can arrange a course if you'd like one. You can find your nearest test centre by calling the Careers Advice Service on 0800 100 900 or by visiting the Read Write Plus Read Write Plus website.
I'm not quite ready to take the test

I haven't done any learning for a long time
Getting a qualification can be useful if you've been out of education for a long time. Not as many people got qualifications in the past, and they weren't as important as they are now. But it's never too late to get recognition for the skills and knowledge you've got.
How long do courses last?
